I am studying International Development & Globalization, and Political Sciences at the University of Ottawa. After the first half of my studies I decided to explore different opportunities to get involved and gain experience in my field. I was lucky enough to be taken on as an intern with Oxfam Canada at the National office in Ottawa as the Public Engagement, Advocacy, and Campaigns Program Assistant for the For All campaign.
During my internship I learned alotabout universal access to public services as an anti-poverty tool, its importance in helping to break the poverty cycle by providing vital essential services to everyone, especially women and girls, as well as to foster and encourage a strong sense of community and empowerment in Canada and abroad. I also learned about how to take these important campaign messages and teach them to a diverse audience.
Through training and working with volunteers, we were able to gain support for the campaign at various summer events and festivals in the Ottawa area. Highlights included making a presentation at the Prime Minister’s office before the G8 summit, as well as campaigning with interns in Toronto at a Coldplay concert! No matter the event, the most rewarding moments were engaging new people and playing a role in creating change.
I learned a lot about major development issues from this internship as well as gained even greater insight by working in the National Office with an amazing group of staff! I not only gained valuable work experience, but also a priceless sense of appreciation for NGOs and what this field has to offer. My entire placement was an enriching experience and no doubt an invaluable reference for my future endeavours!
