I am a fourth year sociology/global development studies student at Queen’s University. My community is as varied as my musical taste, I have been involved with Girl Guides of Canada, after school programs, International development conferences and Canadian idol type competitions, just to name a few. I am a strong believer in donating my time to causes that I care about – such as Oxfam!

I decided that I wanted to become involved with Oxfam when I was looking for somewhere exciting to volunteer during my summer and I came across an internship at Oxfam Canada with their Youth Program. It was one of those situations when you read a position posting and you think – I would LOVE to do that! I was well aware of the reputation that Oxfam has for being a leader in the development organization world. I think that it was only after I had spent a couple weeks at the Oxfam office in Toronto I truly realized just how much Oxfam Canada fits with what I believe we need in this world.

Since becoming involved with Oxfam, I have had the opportunity to take part in a variety of different Oxfam activities. Ipromoted the For All campaignat events such asthe Canada Labour Congress Convention and the Coldplay concert. I also had the opportunity to help plan a training event in the national CHANGE Initiative youth leadership program, for Oxfam campus club leaders across the country. This was a motivational weekend to see my peers being so eager and more then capable of tackling some of the large issues that face our generation.

My latest experiences with Oxfam have beenvolunteering with thegroup back on my university campus -it was a really good feeling to see that there were not enough chairs for all of the students that came to the Queen’s Oxfam campus group’s first meeting of the school year!

I dont think that I can completely explain everything that I have gained and continue to gain through my involvement with Oxfam. While studying social issues, it can be a very depressing topic, very doom and gloom, but my experience with Oxfam has provided me with the knowledge that there are a variety of ways in which we can all work together to change things and there are people out there who are working extremely hard to make it so that this world is just that much better!
