Workplace fundraiser easily engages co-workers

Board member Marty Venalainen has been actively involved with Oxfam for well over 5 years, beginning as a volunteer during his university days. According to Marty, it was “Oxfam’s combination of international development work, relief work, and advocacy” that immediately drew him to the organization that he is still so passionate about today.

Serving on the charity committee at his Toronto law firm, which regularly engages in workplace fundraising initiatives, Marty knew that Oxfam would be a natural choice for them. Together, with his fellow articling students, the committee came up with their next fundraising initiative, Change for Chickens! Their campaign was simple – collecting change and any other donations to raise money to purchase chickens from Oxfam Unwrapped.

Promotion around the office was easy, says Marty. “It might have taken a week. It involved putting up signs and inviting firm members by email to participate.” And the response was great – “better than expected. Nearly everyone contributed, and we received a lot more than just pocked change!”

Asked if he would do it again, Marty said “definitely. By linking in to Oxfam Unwrapped through ‘Change for Chickens’, we provided firm members with an opportunity to contribute to international development in a tangible way.” The event was certainly a success, raising nearly $600; enough to purchase over 35 chickens through Oxfam Unwrapped!

Workplace fundraisers and campaigns are easy to put together, and are a great way to engage your colleagues with important issues – and with one another. For more information on corporate giving and workplace campaigns, please email *protected email*.
