Oxfam Welcomes new Minister of International Development: Calls for continued work on Women and Girls’ Rights

July 15, 2013

Oxfam Canada, today, welcomes Christian Paradis as the new Minister of International Development. “We look forward to working with Minister Paradis”, says Robert Fox, Executive Director of Oxfam Canada. “With 1.3 billion people living in extreme poverty and with women comprising 70 per cent of the world’s poor, it is critical for women to realize and claim their rights.”

Oxfam Canada also calls for continued work on support to small-scale farmers. Almost 900 million people are going hungry, most of them girls and women. “We need to fix a global food system that is deeply flawed,” says Fox. “And that starts with support to women and small-scale farmers.”
